This video and follow-up discussion bring the struggle for the vote to life, with particular focus on the experience of African American women. The one-hour video is an original stage-reading that gives voice to the moral questions and passionate commitments that drove Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass, Carrie Chapman Catt, Alice Paul, and Ida B. Wells-Barnett. It concludes with Fannie Lou Hamer’s 1964 powerful account of voter suppression and makes clear that the fight for the vote did not end with the passage of the 19th Amendment. The program includes questions for follow-up discussion from members of the cast live, online.
Suffragists Speak is presented by the Township of Ocean Historical Museum and is a collaboration of AAUW Northern Monmouth Count (NJ) Branch, League of Women Voters Monmouth County (NJ), and the T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center (Red Bank, NJ) .
